We study the propagation of waves governed by the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation in two-dimensional media with honeycomb symmetry. We explain how conical singularities arise in dispersion surfaces for quasi-momenta of high symmetry (the vertices of the hexagonal Brillouin zone). We then show how the dynamics of wave-packets, which are spectrally localized at these quasi-momenta, is governed by the two-dimensional Dirac equations. This behavior plays an important role in quantum/electronic physics of graphene and in other physical systems with honeycomb symmetry.
