The causal approach to quantum field theory recently met with tremendous success. It was able to describe for the first time rigorous renormalized gauge fields in curved spacetimes and even a background-independent renormalized quantum field theory of gravitation (Brunetti, Fredenhagen, Rejzner).

Within this framework, renormalization boils down to an extension of distributions. I shall describe some ongoing work by Nguyen Viet Dang (in collaboration with Frédéric Hélein and CB)  which provides a geometric description of these extensions and their ambiguities on Lorentzian manifolds.
